Instagram Posts Are Now Google-Searchable: Here’s What That Means for Your Brand

If you’ve been scrolling Instagram lately and saw a notification about your posts being “indexed by Google,” you’re not alone. Instagram recently rolled out an update that allows public professional accounts to be found in Google Search results.

But what does that actually mean for you as a business owner or creator? Do you need to change anything? Is this a good thing?

Let’s break it down because, your Instagram posts may be appearing in Google Search.

🧠 What’s New with Instagram?

Starting July 10, 2025, Instagram began allowing Google to index public posts from professional accounts—that means Business or Creator accounts that are set to public. This includes:

  • Reels

  • Single-image posts

  • Carousels

  • Videos

So now, when someone types a search query into Google, your public Instagram content could show up right alongside websites, blog posts, and YouTube videos.

🔍 Think: “Toledo lash tech,” “vintage t-shirts Ohio,” or “best cinnamon rolls near me.” If you’ve got an Instagram post with those keywords? It might show up in search.

👀 Who Does This Impact?

This update only applies to public accounts set to professional mode (Business or Creator), and the account owner must be 18 or older.

You’re included if:

✅ You have a Business or Creator account

✅ Your profile is public

✅ You’re over 18

✅ You’re posting visuals (reels, photos, videos, etc.)

If that sounds like you—Google might start showing your IG posts in search results soon (if it hasn’t already).

🔒 What About Privacy?

This change does not affect private accounts or personal accounts. Also, if you’re not ready to have your content show up on Google, you can turn this feature off:

How to disable Google indexing

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy

  2. Tap Search Engine Visibility

  3. Toggle it off

If you're happy with the extra exposure, no action is needed.

📈 Why This Is a Big Opportunity for Small Businesses

This update is more than just a tech change—it’s a chance for your brand to get free exposure outside of Instagram.

Here’s what it could mean for you:

  • You don’t need a website to show up on Google.

Instagram posts can now work like mini landing pages when optimized right.

  • You can boost your local visibility.

A local bakery, stylist, or yoga studio could appear in “near me” searchesfrom their Instagram post alone.

  • Your posts are now evergreen.

A reel that answered an FAQ two months ago might still bring in new customers today.

🛠 How to Optimize Your Instagram Posts for Google Search

If you’re going to show up in search, you want to show up the right way. Here are quick tips to make your IG content more searchable:

1. Use Keyword-Friendly Captions

Think about what your customers are typing into Google. Instead of “y’all this was so cute,” try:

“New fall nail colors available now – neutral tones, matte finish, and custom art. Book in Toledo!”

2. Add Alt Text to Your Posts

When uploading a post, hit Advanced Settings → Write Alt Text. Describe the image using keywords related to your business.

3. Tag Your Location

Especially for local businesses. That’s how you show up in “near me” and city-based searches.

4. Answer Real Questions

Create Reels that answer common client questions.

Ex:

  1. “How to prep for your first facial”

  2. “3 things to know before booking your wedding photographer”

  3. “Best shoes to pair with wide-leg pants (2025 edition)”
